Etymology
From de nds Pinöpel, from de gml pinappel, gml pināpel, gml pinākel roundish ornament at the top of a steeple, itself borrowed from de la pinnāculum. Cognate with en pinnacle.
The form gml pinappel is a phono-semantic matching as gml pinne pin + gml appel apple, at least regionally also conflated with gml pînappel pinecone.Pinnappel in Westfälisches Wörterbuch at de Wörterbuchnetz.42617 pijnappel The form gml pināpel is either an intermediate step in this development or a later compromise with the original form. The modern umlaut vowel is perhaps best explained as a backformation from the diminutive (nds Pinöpelken with /œː/ regularly derived from nds Pinapel with /ɔː/).
