Appendix:Variations of "aj" Albanian Alternative forms sq -anj -anji Etymology Nominal suffix sq -aj -s; he; of/to the/him/his denotes tribal/family name patronyms and toponyms; meaning “descendant/inhabitant of”. The earliest examples appear in the form sq -anj, as attested, for example, by Pjetër Bogdani (1685), "Pleqënia e shtëpisë Bogdananjet." The form is also preserved in southern Albanian and Arvanitika. Its ultimate origin is uncertain. Jokl proposed a derivation from the Latin suffix la -anius, comparing Italian surnames such as it Galvagni and it Mascagni. Weigand disputed this derivation, pointing to the variant sq -ej after palatals, as in Synej and Reshej; Xhuvani and Çabej followed his objection. Arapi notes that the latter authors provide no supporting arguments and classifies the suffix among those of native or uncertain origin.Arapi, Ina (2012), “Albanisch-rumänische Parallelen: Die Suffixe”, in Wolfgang Dahmen et al., editors, Südosteuropäische Romania: Siedlungs-/Migrationsgeschichte und Sprachtypologie.
