Latin
Etymology
Initially thought to derive from la ine-pro *dʰeyǵʰ- to knead clay, build, relating to the clay banks of the river; however, this is rather un-Italic phonetically.DNGI: Dizionario dei nomi geografici italiani, TEA, Torino 1992, p. 268
Alternatively, from la ine-pro *digʰ- she-goat (see also grc δίζα goat, gmw-pro *tigā). Combined with la -entia, the name would translate to something like ‘stream of the goats.’
