la Poenicus
Etymology
Variant of la Poenicus, from la Poenus Phoenician la icus.
The ethnonym is an adoption of la grc Φοῖνιξ, homophonous with grc φοῖνιξ Tyrian purple. There has been some debate as to whether the ethnonym was derived from the name of the dye or vice versa. While it seems in any case likely that both are influenced by the genuinely Greek adjective grc φοινός blood-red, the ethnonym is recorded already in gmy 𐀡𐀛𐀑𐀍, and is apparently a loan from la egy fnḫw Asiatics, Semites, f:n:x-w-V12:Z2
