Etymology
mul :af grc:μέγας<t:large> grc:σαῦρος<t:lizard>
From mul grc μέγας large + grc σαῦρος lizard, mul Q2143830 1 as a translation of his original 1821 English name for it, "Huge Lizard". The genus name was formally announced in 1824 by William Buckland. Although it predated (and in large part inspired) the use of the suffix mul -saurus for dinosaur genera, it can be analysed as mul megalo- -saurus.
