Etymology
nb non Etnardalr, from the genitive non Etnar of the old river name non Etn, followed by non dalr valley, literally “valley of the Etna”. The modern form has the definite singular ending nb -en definite singular suffix.
The river name non Etn is of uncertain origin. It has been tentatively connected with Old Norse non etja to urge, drive forward or non eta to eat.
The valley name was also used as the official name of the municipality created in 1894. By royal resolution of 3 November 1917, the municipality name was changed from nb Etnedalen to nb Etnedal, removing the definite ending nb -en.
