Etymology
en :inh enm:-ical<ety:af<-ik<id:adjectival suffix><alt:-ic>><-al<id:adjectival suffix>>> 1
From en enm -ical, a combination of en -ic from en fro -ique, from en la -icus, related to Ancient Greek suffix grc -ικός, plus en -al from Latin adjective suffix la -alis, or en fro -el.
en -ic -al.
Pronunciation
en /ɪkəl/ (stress-imposing)
Suffix
Used to form adjectives from nouns with the meaning "of or pertaining to"; adjectival suffix appended to various words, often nouns, to make an adjective form. Often added to words of Greek or Latin origin, but used with other words also.
en mythical, en quizzical, en theistical, en whimsical
Usage notes
Often redundant to the use of en -ic alone; for example, en mythic and en mythical are identical in meaning. Likewise for en -etic, as in en phonetic and en phonetical. For words that naturally end in en -ic such as en magic and en statistic, the addition is only of en -al.
