Etymology
First attested as Traiecto in 535. From nl dum maestrecht, from nl la Mosae Traiectum. All forms are derived from the hydronym nl Maas and nl tricht crossing, ferry (derived in turn from la traiectus crossing). The element Maas was added at a later date to distinguish the city from nl Tricht and nl Utrecht.
