Etymology
Based on HTML code, in which a slash indicates the end of an element (for example, </b> marks the end of bold formatting). Originally written as </sarcasm> (to mark the end of a sarcastic message) with the block of text enclosed (see < > </ >), this was later simplified to /sarcasm and eventually just /s.Khodak Mikhail Saunshi Nikunj Vodrahalli Kiran A Large Self-Annotated Corpus for Sarcasm Proceedings of the Language Resources and Evaluation Conference 7–12 May 2018 1 http://www.lrec-conf.org/proceedings/lrec2018/pdf/160.pdf 8 February 2019 2017arXiv170405579K https://web.archive.org/web/20261002092641/http://www.lrec-conf.org/proceedings/lrec2018/pdf/160.pdf 2 October 2026
