German Etymology de nds Feudel, nds Feul, nds Feil, either from or cognate with de nl feil (“floorcloth”, attested 1616). Further origin de 1. Ripuarian gmw-cfr Fuddel old rag, if related, would suggest that the d is original, whereas all of the following theories require that it is due to hypercorrection: From de fro faille headscarf, veil, but this is itself of unknown origin and the sense is only a vague match. From de gmw-pro *fāgil(u), *fegil(u), a hypothetical tool noun of gmw-pro *fāgōn, gmw-pro *fegōn to clean, brush, whence nl vagen, de fegen. From corruption of gmw-pro *þwahilu, tool noun of gmw-pro *þwahan to wash. Compare nl dweil, de gml dweile cleaning cloth, floorcloth. This would be the easiest explanation as nl dweil and nl feil are entirely synonymous. A development þw → f is also phonetically plausible, though there seem to be no analogous examples.
