German
Etymology
From de gmh *britze (attested in derivatives, simplex 15th c.), from de goh britissa thin plank, derived from goh bret (de gem-pro *bredą, whence modern de Brett) + goh -issa (gem-pro *-isjō). P- for initial b- and -tsch- for -tz- are sporadic developments, here reinforced by onomatopoeia. The predominant sense in older Modern German was that of a baton.
