The name is related to the adjective sv fal grayly/yellowly pale, originally in reference to either this area or the river itself. A river name *Falan might have referred to the color of the water. The name of the area, potentially containing a noun *fala (“pale yellow dryland”), could have been given due to the yellow ochre deposited by Gruvbäcken, or denoted the local thingstead and marketplace of the Kopparberg region.
