Etymology
nb ine-pro *dwey-
nb, borrowed from nb grc Δεῖμος Deimos, personification of dread and terror, from nb grc δειμός fear, terror, from nb grc δέος fear, alarm, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European nb ine-pro *dwey- to fear.
The astronomical sense is named after the mythological Deimos, who accompanies nb Ares in battle and is closely associated with nb Fobos. The moon was discovered by Asaph Hall on 11 August 1877 (12 August UTC). The names of Mars's two moons were suggested by Henry George Madan from figures accompanying Ares in Homer's Iliad; Hall preferred Deimos for the outer moon and Phobos for the inner one.
Parallel international forms include da Deimos, sv Deimos, de Deimos, nl Deimos, fi Deimos, it Deimos, pt Deimos and en Deimos. Compare also el Δείμος and fr Déimos.
