statt stått
German
Etymology
de ine-pro *steh₂-
de :from Stadt
A mere orthographic variant of de Stadt city. de Stätte Stadt. Cognate with en stead.
Pronunciation
de /ʃtat/
de at 1
Noun
f.sg
de literary obsolescent abode, stead, place
Usage notes
The word is now obsolete outside of compounds and the rare expression de bleibende Statt lasting abode. Most compounds with de -statt are either archaic or have a more common variant with de -stätte. The main exception is de Werkstatt workshop. All such compounds, moreover, now form the plural with de -stätten. The older plural de -stätte is obsolete (see citations page for examples).
Until the 1996 spelling reform, de Statt was also used in expressions like de an meiner Statt in my stead, instead of me. This spelling is still found, but the standard form is now de an meiner statt, where de statt is interpreted as a postpositioned use of the preposition de statt instead.
