Etymology
fj. Possibly from fj yadi to take Ra dialect, referring to a chief taking a woman as wife, though this is speculative. The form originated on the eastern coast of Viti Levu.

Usage notes
Originally limited to the eastern coast of Viti Levu, this form of address has become commonly adopted by chiefly women throughout Fiji.
The informal abbreviation fj Di (as in fj Di Lala for fj Adi Lalabalavu) is not considered disrespectful, similar to en Ma'am (for en Madam).
In Lau and parts of Verata, the form fj Yadi is used instead, following the Lauan sound change of epenthetic fj y- before initial fj a-.
