Norwegian Bokmål
Etymology
From the name of the farm nb Grevæg in Trøgstad, now in Indre Østfold.
The name is first recorded circa 1400 as Grafegg, and later as Graffeg in 1593, Greffegh in 1604 and 1612, and Greweg in 1723. The second element is Old Norse non egg edge, ridge. The first element is uncertain. The oldest form may contain Old Norse non grǫf pit, hollow, although it has alternatively been connected with Old Norse non gref spade, possibly referring to the shape of the ridge.
