Etymology
First attested as illip in 1347. Derived from a hydronym, derived in turn from a compound of an unclean first element and nl odt *apa river, watercourse. The first element may be a term meaning "yellowish-brown". The first element has also been interpreted as a term cognate to nl ijlen hurry, but this is unlikely as the watercourse does not move quickly.
