Originated from CIMB's prominent use of an animated octopus/squid mascot in its marketing campaigns and digital interfaces during the 2010s. The mascot (often appearing in red, the bank's corporate colour) became so synonymous with the brand that Malaysians began referring to the bank simply as the "Squid Bank."
