English Proper noun Early Modern Irish A transition language that came after Middle Irish and which later evolved into the modern Goidelic languages of Irish and Scottish Gaelic in the 17th century. en Classical Gaelic Usage notes "Early Modern Irish" is used to refer to the historical forms of modern Irish and Scottish Gaelic, which fully evolved into their modern forms in the 1600s. This term is usually not used to refer to Manx, as Classical Gaelic, the main standardised form of the language, was never used on the Isle of Man. Classical Gaelic continued to be used until the 18th century, when it fell out of use in favour of writing directly in the local vernacular forms.
