German
Etymology
From de nds Plockwost. For the first element there are three explanations: (1) from de gml plock, gml pluck post, stake, cognate of de Pflock, due to its shape, which is reminiscent of a fence post; (2) from a variant of de Block block; (3) from a Low German word for “lump of fat”, in turn likely from gml plücken to pluck, cognate of de pflücken; perhaps comparable to en pluck entrails.
