schwamm Schwamm
Hunsrik
Noun
hrx noun form m
hrx Schwamm
Luxembourgish
Pronunciation
lb [ʃwæm]
Etymology 1
From lb gmh swemme, deverbal from gmh swemmen, from lb gem-pro *swammijaną to make swim, causative of gem-pro *swimmaną to swim. Cognate with de Schwemme. The lb - spelling with ⟨ä⟩ is unusual, because its usage normally follows the German cognate and the underlying verb lb schwemmen to sweep, to wash ashore is indeed spelt accordingly. Apparently the noun was felt to be a direct derivative of lb schwammen to swim.
