Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from lv fa افغان Afghan afġân or from lv ar اَفْغَان Afghan, and fa ـستان -estân, a common ending for country names. In lv -, the word was made into a feminine, 4th-declension noun, following the general pattern for country names.
