Etymology
(Noord-Holland) Attested as Stoomgemaal-de-Lijnden in 1867. Named after a steam-powered pumphouse named in turn after engineer Frans Godard van Lynden van Hemmen (1836-1931) nl Frans Godert baron van Lynden van Hemmen. See en Linden.
(Gelderland) First attested as de lino in the 11th century. Etymology nl 1. Potentially derived from nl la linum flax, Linum usitatissimum, nl gem-pro *līną flax, Linum usitatissimum or nl dum lijn rope. An alternative possibility is a derivation from gem-pro *hlîn- Norway maple (Acer platanoides species) (see non hlynr). Finally, a reinterpretation of older forms of the name might have given rise to a derivation from nl dum lijnde rope, rope used to demarcate property lines or dialectal nl liende linden, Tilia sp. (see nl linde).
Compare nl Lienden, nl Linden, nl Linne and nl Linschoten.
