Bengali
Alternative forms
bn -ক -k Varendra
Etymology
bn inc-obn -কে -ke suffix, from earlier *-kaï < *-kahi, from bn pra-mag *𑀓𑀳𑁂 at the side, toward postposition, from earlier *kakhe, an unemphatic grammaticalized form of pra-mag 𑀓𑀓𑁆𑀔𑁂, from bn sa कक्ष কক্ষে in the armpit loc. sg.. Related to bn কাঁখ and bn কাছ.
Since Old Bengali, the final /e/ has sometimes been replaced by /ɔ/ and, eventually, deleted, which could be due to analogy with the pleonastic bn -ক -k, or due to extension of the meaning to the base form of the source, i.e. pra *𑀓𑀳, from sa কক্ষ.
