First attested as herdingfelde in 1105. Derived from a compound of nl odt *Hardo a personal name suffixed with the collectivising suffix odt -ing- and nl veld field. Originally the name of a single village, currently split in nl Boven-Hardinxveld and nl Neder-Hardinxveld.
