Punjabi
Etymology
pa inc-opa -ਅੰਦਾ, from pa pra-sau -𑀅𑀦𑁆𑀢, from pa sa -अन्तम्, the masculine singular accusative of sa -अत्. pra-sau -𑀅𑀦𑁆𑀢 was later extended with pa ka to form the Old Punjabi suffix. Ultimately from pa ine-pro *-onts.
Cognate with hi -ता, be -у́чы, de -end, en -ing, and fa ـنده -ande.
Pronunciation

pa [d̪ɐ(ˑ)] colloquial,Canada
pa äː 1
Suffix
pa suffix Shahmukhi ـدا
conjugates verbs into the masculine singular indicative present tense
pa ਕਰਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ to do he does
derives the masculine singular imperfective participle from verbs, which is used only in periphrastic constructions involving pa ਹੋਣਾ to be
pa ਫਿਰਨਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ to turn turning
pa ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ He is turning around
pa ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ turning (masculine singular adjective)
when used in statements with pa ਜੇ if or pa ਤਾਂ then, conjugates verbs into the masculine singular past tense contrafactual
pa ਜੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ... if he had gone...; had he gone...
pa ... ਤਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ...then he would have eaten
Usage notes
Before consonant‑final noun stems, this suffix attaches without change. For example, pa ਦੌੜਣਾ ਦੌੜਦਾ. However, with stems ending in a vowel it normally nasalizes that vowel and often inserts a weakly articulated /n/, as in:
pa ਦੇਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ
pa ਪੀਣਾ ਪੀਂਦਾ
This nasalization is preserved from an original nasal consonant from inc-opa -ਅੰਦਾ.
Irregular conjugations include pa ਹੋਣਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ and pa ਧੋਣਾ ਧੋਦਾ. This is not the case for other such verbs with roots ending in pa -ਓ, which morph regularly: for example, pa ਢੋਣਾ ਢੋਂਦਾ.
