la.
Roman mythology derived the name from la Rōmulus, name of the legendary founder and first king. This is almost certainly a folk etymology, and the name of the mythical figure is more likely derived from the city name.
The word may derive from la Rumon, which according to the Roman grammarian Servius the Grammarian Servius was an archaic name for the Tiber River. This could in turn be from some la ine la qfa-sub, such as la xum - or la xfa -, perhaps earlier *Sroumon- assuming a loss of *s-, ultimately from la ine-pro *srówmō *(s)rów-mon- or ine-pro *(s)réw-mon- river, stream flow, derived from the root ine-pro *srew- to flow + ine-pro *-mō//*-mḗn; compare grc ῥεῦμα flow, current, stream, grc Στρῡμών la Strymon, Struma a word of txh - origin, sq rrymë stream, current, sla-pro *strumy stream, lt stràuma stream, gem-pro *straumaz river, stream whence en stream and sga sruaimm riversga. (Note that some of these are from thematicized ine-pro *srow-m-o/eh₂-, and there are several ablaut variants.) However, this is speculative, as no such place-name in another language in the relevant region is recorded. If correct, it is a la Strymon 1.
Alternatively, the word may be of la ett - origin, as ett 𐌓𐌖𐌌𐌀 was one of the Etruscan la gens gentes, from ett 𐌓𐌖𐌌 teat. Given the lack of a secure Indo-European etymology for la Rōma, this possibility is most appealing.ett derived from ett 𐌓𐌖𐌌 teat? See also Ficus Ruminalis. la
Other ideas
Severius assumed a relation to both the Greek grc ῥεῦμα river, grc ῥέω to flow and la ruō to rush, hurry; to fall hurry, though these two roots are now known to be unrelated. The connection to la ruō is still occasionally suggested, assuming an ad hoc semantic development to flow, but the Latin la *rōm- would still need to be borrowed rather than derived natively from this root. See ine-pro *h₃rew-. Even less likely is Severius' etymology of the aforementioned name of the Tiber, describing it as la rūmināns chewing away, from la rūmen throat, gullet. Nor is there any likely relation to la ruō to dig out dig out.
Plutarch assumed derivation from grc ῥώμη strength; this is fanciful.
