Etymology
16th century, probably from de nl muiterij, from de dum muiterie (attested 1350), eventually derived from de fro meute, whence also de Meute. The Middle Dutch itself might be from de frm meuterie, which, however, is later and generally rare. While the Middle French is given by several German dictionaries as the etymon of de Meuterei, most Dutch dictionaries consider dum muiterie as a native derivation.
