Dutch
Etymology
First attested as de elspete in 1227. Etymology nl 1. Compound of an unclear first element and nl speet dug ground. The first element has been interpreted to mean "old" (to contrast with nl Nunspeet), although no forms of the toponym that include a dental are attested. A derivation from nl els alder, Alnus is also possible. See also nl Elburg.
