Inari Sami
Etymology
Originally the name of the lake Inari. According to Rahkonen (2013), through Proto-Samic from an unknown language in the form und *Indjäɣ(ə)r.Rahkonen, Pauli. Suomen etymologisesti läpinäkymätöntä vesistönimistöä [Etymological opacity in Finnish hydronyms]. Virittäjä 1/2013. p. 27 (the latter component possibly ultimately deriving from smn urj-fpr-pro *jäwrä lake, while the initial component und *ind(V)- cannot be traced to any known language). Later, Rahkonen (2021) speculated that the name may be related to an old lake name und Indärjärv south of the River Svir.Rahkonen, Pauli. Suomeen suuntautuneiden nimistövirtausten monimuotoisuus. Muinaistutkija 1/2021. p. 25–26
