fahre
German
Etymology
de gem-pro 1
From northern de gmh vere ver(e) (13th c.), from de goh *fera, from de gem-pro *farjǭ ferry, derived from gem-pro *farjaną to bring, carry, the causative of gem-pro *faraną to travel, whence de fahren. Analogy with this verb caused the modern ⟨ä⟩-spelling. The word was at first chiefly Central German, later being reinforced by cognate de gml vēre. Upper German dialects used gmh var n, from gem-pro *farą. Both words originally meant both the place and vehicle of crossing. Akin to nl veer, en ferry, da færge, sv färja.
