Finnish
Etymology
From fi urj-fin-pro *-në-, probably from fi urj-pro *-ne. Related to izh -ne-, krl -ne-, vot -ne-, and probably hu -na-, hu -ne- (conditional mood markers).
Interfix
fi interfix
Marker of potential mood in verbs.
fi lähtee → lähtenee he/she leaves/goes → he/she will probably leave
Usage notes
Appended to the strong verbal stem. Exact form depends, as the infix may trigger assimilation or be subjected to it depending on the inflection type of the verb. In particular, fi -l-, fi -r- and fi -s- tend to assimilate the fi -n- (such as fi tulee → fi tullee), while a stem-final fi -t- is assimilated into the fi -n- (such as fi huomaan → fi huomannen). With nähdä-type verbs, the final fi -k- becomes fi -h- (such as fi näkee → fi nähnee). The verb fi olla to be is suppletive and has exceptional potential forms with the stem fi lie(ne)-.
