First attested as lusne in 1311. nl oud Leusen. The element Leusen is of nl unknown origin and is not related to nl loos drainage channel. The element nl oud old was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from nl Nieuwleusen. Compare nl Dalfsen, nl Hessum and nl Welsum.
