Etymology
From en qu Shanay-Timpishka, literally "boiled by the heat of the sun".
Proper noun
A thermal river in the Amazon in Peru, a tributary of the Pachitea (and eventually the Amazon River), the lower 6.3 km (3.9 miles) of which is geothermally heated to almost boiling (86 to 95 °C, rarely as high as 99 °C).
2019, F Vieira, V Hamza, "Assessment of geothermal resources of South America-a new look", in the International Journal of Terrestrial Heat Flow and Applied Geothermics, volume 2, number 1 (2019):
The highest value of RBUA of 692 GJ/m2 has been found for the site Shanay-Timpishka, situated at the eastern slope of Andean mountains in Peru (Cueto et al, 2016; Ruzo, 2016).
2020, LE Stevens, RR Johnson, C Estes, "The Watershed Continuum: A Conceptual Model of Fluvial-Riparian Ecosystems", in "Riparian Research and Management"
For example, Silver Springs provides nearly 13 m3/sec of baseflow to the Silver River in Florida (Odum 1957), and the newly discovered Shanay-Timpishka River is a large geothermal river arising on the floor of the Amazon basin (Ruzo 2016).
2024, Zahid Ameer, "Shanay-Timpishka: The Only Boiling River in the World":
A fire in the area surrounding Shanay-Timpishka could have devastating consequences, not only by destroying the forest but also by potentially disrupting the geothermal processes that heat the river.
