Etymology
Originally referred to the river in southern Spain. It was likely named between 711 CE and 1492 CE, when Spain came under Muslim control, and the Prestige (sociolinguistics) high-prestige language became Arabic. See Guadalupe (Spain).
"An alternative etymological explanation, which is commonly found on the internet, states that the name may have derived from the Arabic word for 'valley' or 'river' (wadi) and the Latin word lupus, meaning 'wolf'. "St. Louis - News - The Mexican explains why Our Lady of Guadalupe is Muslim, sorta". Archived from the original on 2014-12-08. Retrieved 2007-09-14. Some find it unlikely that Arabic and Latin would be combined in this way, and suggest as an alternative the Arabic "Wadi-al-lub", signifying a river with black stones in its bed.
