Etymology
la abstract noun :der ine-pro:*-Hō<id:Hoffmann> suffix
See la ine-pro *-Hō. Compare also la -tūdō.
Leumann 1977 compares Greek grc ἀλγηδών and argues the suffix developed by rebracketing of formations in la -dō built on verbs with stems ending in la -ē-, such as la torpēdō from la torpeō§ 325 367 (whose ending is derived from the PIE stative suffix ine-pro *-éh₁yeti). Gary Miller 2006 expresses doubt about the overall etymology (including whether it is related to la -ē- verbs), but suggests la -ēdō, la -īdō and la -tūdō share a common element ine-pro *-Hdon- which might go back to earlier ine-pro *-(e)t-h₃onh₂-.Gary Miller D.
