Appendix:Variations of "al" English Etymology 1 en adjectival suffix :inh enm:-al<id:adjectival suffix> From en enm -al, from the en la - adjective suffix la -ālis, or French, Middle French and Old French fr -el, fr -al. Distant en -ar 1. Alternative forms en -all obsolete en -ial en -ual en -arial Pronunciation en /əl/ [l̩] [ɫ̩] en LL-Q1860 (eng)-Vealhurl--al.wav Southern England Suffix s en adjectival Of or pertaining to. Adjectival suffix appended to various words, often nouns, to produce an adjective form. Often added to words of Latin origin, but used with other words also. en base basal en cranium cranial en spine spinal en distant distal en nominal Forming nouns, especially of verbal action. en propose proposal en deny denial en bestow bestowal Usage notes Most adjectives with this ending were not formed in English, but were taken from Latin (or French). In Latin, the ending la -ālis (whence en -al) had the alternative form la -āris (whence en -ar), which was often used when the base word contained l. The use of -al or -ar is inconsistent: While words like en formular, en fibular, en capsular, and en bulbar follow the Latin norm, words like en molal, en phylal, en salmonellal, and en zooxanthellal do not. Some words show variation between en -al and en -ar, such as en lobar and en lobal, en acinar and en acinal; variation also existed in Latin, as with la līneāris and hence en linear vs la līneālis and hence en lineal. However, the ending en -al is always used if the last l in the base word is followed by r, e.g. en cultural, en scleral, en microfloral, en pleural, en loral, en labral (compare en glomerular, where the last l in en glomerulus is not followed by r). The ending also appears in the extended forms en -ial and en -ual, as in en manorial and en eventual. If the base word ends: with la -us us, um or a, it is dropped (e.g. en viral, from en virus; en bronchial (la-new bronchiālis), from en bronchium; en corneal from en cornea); with er / re (mostly derived from the Latin ending -rum), the e is dropped (e.g. en membral, from en member (la membrum); en central, from en center center/centre (la centrum)); or with a consonant + le (mostly derived from the Latin endings la -ulus -ulus, -ulum, -ula), the latter usually changes to ul (e.g. en muscular, from en muscle (la mūsculus); en vehicular, from en vehicle (la vehiculum); en arbuscular, from en arbuscle (la arbuscula)). As a nominalizer, some verbs have two corresponding nouns, one ending in en -al and the other in en -tion/en -sion (more common suffix), with one or the other being more common, sometimes with different nuances. Notable examples: en disposition/en disposal (en dispose), en proposition/en proposal (en propose), en submission/en submittal (en submit), en transmission/en transmittal (en transmit). Some superficial pairs are actually of different origin, notably en reversion/en reversal (respectively related to en revert and en reverse). Final silent e is dropped before this suffix, e.g. en casal, from en case.
