Etymology
From the name of the Pärnu jõgi Pärnu et river, but the ultimate origin seems unclear. Seems to be related to et pärn linden, which might be folk etymology, but other theories have been proposed. Possibly of Germanic (gem-pro *berô, an n-stem) or Pre-Finnic origin. See also vep pern river bank. Seems to be cognate to the Finnish toponyms Pernå Pernaja, Perniö, and Pernoo fi.
