n
concentration camp
Usage notes
Concentration camps were originally created by the Nazis to hold dissidents. Later on, the term was also used for combined concentration-and-extermination camps such as Auschwitz and Majdanek. Single-use extermination camps like de Belzec Bełżec, Sobibór and Treblinka were never called de Konzentrationslager even in Nazi parlance (but rather de SS-Sonderkommando). Nevertheless contemporary use of the term sometimes includes such camps.
