Appendix:Variations of "calo"
Vietnamese
vi:sông +
Etymology
Trần Trọng Dương (2013) considers this a disyllabic derivation of the proto-Vietnamese form he provisionally reconstructed as /*klù/. It is likely a vi sấu 1, and therefore, vi mkh-vie-pro *k-ruːʔ 1 crocodile (Ferlus, 2007). The meaning of the hydronym, then, could be roughly translated as “crocodile(-infested) river”.
For other case of disyllabic derivation in Vietnamese, see vi thằn lằn, vi thốt nốt, etc.
