Etymology
The city is named after the river (fi Oulujoki), in turn after the lake (fi Oulujärvi). The name is first attested as fi vlu (probably in reference to the lake) in 1327. Probably from the dialectal term fi oulu floodwater,Janne Saarikivi: Oulu-nimen etymologia / "Etymology of the name Oulu" a fi smi borrowing, ultimately from fi smi-pro *oalē waterway. Alternatively, the aforementioned Samic term might be borrowed from Finnish, which would rather derive from another Samic term, smi-pro *võvl(V), in turn from earlier unk *votl- (compare to the name of the Vodla river in Russia), perhaps a Paleo-European substrate borrowing.Rahkonen, Pauli.
