Etymology
Of uncertain origin. Delamarre derives it from la ine-pro *Hreǵʰ- to flow water,Delamarre, p. 219 which would connect it to en rain, sq rrjedh to stream, flow, but this root does not have any known Celtic descendants, which would be the expected source for the area. Butmann derives it from ine-pro *h₃reyH- to flow, which would make it related to the river en Rhine, but Ferguson finds this derivation "too narrow."Ferguson, Robert (2011): The River-Names of Europe
