Etymology
Originally known as ast Abillés (Abiyés, by the 17th century) , "Avilés" appeared for the first time in Asturian literature in 1896, probably borrowed from ast es Avilés, eventually replacing the native name of the city, perhaps because of the large amount of Spanish-speaking inmigration the city received during the industrial revolution.
