First attested as bele in 1188. Compound of nl over upper, upstream and a second component of nl 1 etymology. Possibilities include a derivation from a term cognate to nl buil swelling or a derivation from nl gem-pro *bili- jutting, protruding. A third etymology interprets biel as "hunting ground".
