Etymology
nb ru Белору́ссия. nb hvit Russland hvite white Russia.
Alternatively, a nb be Белару́сь Belarus White Rus 1, from historical nb be Бе́лая Русь White Rus, from nb orv Бѣла Русь White Rus, but this analysis is historically misleading: the source element orv Русь Rus' denotes the medieval Rus' polity or people, associated especially with Kievan Rus', and not modern Russia (ru Россия Russia). The historically accurate literal interpretation of Беларусь would therefore be *Hvite-Rus, but is never used.
Compare the parallel calques nn Kviterussland, da Hviderusland, sv Vitryssland, fo Hvítarussland, is Hvíta-Rússland and de Weißrussland Belarus.
