Old Armenian
Etymology
From the stem vowel xcl -ի and the element xcl -այ, which is probably of the same origin as the genitive-dative ending of a-declension nouns. Later contaminated with syc ܝܐ- masculine gentilic suffix -āyāʾ in borrowings such as xcl հրեայ, xcl քաղդեայ and the Iranian ending in borrowings such as xcl աշտեայ, xcl դժնեայ.
