Etymology
First attested as asle in the first quarter of the 13th century. Compound of nl over upper, upstream and a compound of nl odt asc ash, Fraxinus excelsior and nl lo light forest. The element nl over is a late addition to distinguish the settlement from nl Nederasselt. Compare nl Assel and nl Asselt.
