en ine-pro *meyth₂-
From en Michaelmas term; en Michaelmas is from en Michael the name of the biblical archangel + en -mas suffix indicating a holiday or sacred day, meaning the feast day of Michael (archangel) St Michael. en Michael is derived from en la-lat Michahel, from en grc-koi Μιχαήλ, from en hbo מִיכָאֵל mîḵāʾēl who is like God?; while en -mas is from en mass, from en enm masse, from en ang mæsse mass (celebration of the Eucharist), from en la-vul *messa Eucharist; dismissal, from en la-lat missa, a noun use of the feminine past participle of en la mittere, the present active infinitive of la mittō to dispatch, send; to discharge, release; to dismiss, possibly ultimately from en ine-pro *meyth₂- to exchange. The Christian feast day of Michaelmas, 29 September, occurs a few days before the start of this term.
