Etymology
en de Sinti.
Proper noun
p Sinto
An ethnic group, part of the Romani people of Europe.
en 2024 USC Shoah Foundation Roma and Sinti The place of origin of the Sinti (singular: Sinto) is clearly spelled out in their ethnonym: they come from the Sindh, an area in the North-West of India (now Pakistan). Therefore the ethnonym 'Sinto' is also a toponym.
1411-1419, cited in Rinaldo DiRicchardi-Reichard, To be or not to be Sinti, Gypsy, and Romani: Crisis of Sinti Ethnic Identity:
The Sinti first appeared in Switzerland in 1411... the Sinti said that they were pilgrims and they intended to return to the land of Sindh.
Usage notes
In Sinti usage, the ethnonym is traditionally understood as deriving from Sindh, a region in the northwestern Indian subcontinent (now Pakistan), functioning as a toponymic self-designation. Sinti and Roma are understood as related but distinct ethnic groups. Sinti speak Sinte Romani (also called en Sintitikes or en Romenes), which is not mutually intelligible with the Romani language (Rromanes).
