Etymology
From vi scb - [Rục] cɨ́ːt ("mountain") (other "Chứt" groups have different words for "mountain", such as aem - lakùːɲ, Mày kon²). Often linked further with the word for "mountain" in vi cmc -; compare cja chœk, cjm cek [cəʔ], rad čư̆.
As a term for the "ethnic group", this seems like a rather recent invention. Speakers of these languages often self-identify with their own group (Rục, Sách, Mày, Arem, etc.), not often with the label Chứt as whole.
